I don't get it, is it an ego thing?Why do people give a negative when you are the expert and giving good advice?
Some users simply don't like your answer, others hope by giving you a thumb down they might have a better chance to recieve a BA, and then there are those trolls who give thumbs down randomly - just because they think it's funny to aggrevate other users.Why do people give a negative when you are the expert and giving good advice?

I don't want to tear down your cathedral, but maybe even experts can get it wrong sometimes? Or is that blasphemy?





Maybe you should just lighten up a little (in this particular case, for I don't know how light-hearted you slide through the rest of your life...)? ;))
Social interactions are funny (odd) things. The situation makes a big difference. Usually in my experience from both sides of that situation is that either the expert is not recognized as such by the listener, or the information is presented poorly. People tend to dislike being preached at, no matter what the subject.





And sometimes people disagree in a way that indicates they want to learn more, where they are presenting the arguments that they see as important in making it dfficult for them to accept the ideas presented by the expert. Do not imagine that just because you are an expert that you cannot learn from your discussion with non-experts. And don't imagine that just because they are not expert, that they cannot understand why you support your views (the reason you think what you do).





As for the absence of recognition of expertise, the history of the relationship is usually important. Older siblings or peers that you have known since forever tend to think of you in the way that you once were and may think of you in a subordinate social position that precludes your being an expert in areas that they are not. Strangers may be unaware of your extensive knowledge in the subject unless you are introduced to them as an expert.





And finally, even experts can be wrong. Happens all the time.
It's not really negative--A good answer will give the pros and cons of an issue and let the asker do some thing as to which way to go. nothing is really black or white but the gray areas in the middle is vthe part that must be concidered as the best course in that situation. Be thankful you get both views of a solution.everyone needs the opportunity to have thoughts on the final outcome.--You get pros and cons and allowed to participate in the answer--who can you blame if it's not the best answer. no-one--but you feel good you covered the bases for ethical proplem solving

If you could humble yourself, and discover a much greater notion to serve than to command, to make people's life better, and improve their harmony with their inner selves, their spirit, and the Gods, you should definitely try priesthood (in whatever religion you do practice. Anyway, please, please, pleeease, consider Heathenry if you feel you have a knack for blessing people's lifes).





If your will to command is greater than your will to serve, and it can't be changed, I'd say try motivational speaking or politics.
Just become an American politician. Many of them have those qualities and always want to be in a position of superiority and authority. Psychology is probably the better route.
If you're really into psychology, go for it, but from what I saw you would make a good political speechwriter. As long as you wouldn't object to having to lie all the time:-)

People trying to talk me out of becoming a cop, any advice?

I am in a very rewarding and flexible career right now. I do cancer research but I really want to become a cop but friends are trying to talk me out of it by saying things like ';Think about your wife and kids'; and ';you could get shot'; or saying things that would promote fear in someones heart, I don't fear but all they said has got me thinking, any advice out there?People trying to talk me out of becoming a cop, any advice?
It is a wise person who sits down and calculates the cost. In other words, before making such a radical career change, try to look at every angle possible before making a final decision. Examine your heart and KNOW WHY you want to be a police officer, and be honest with yourself.


Look at the pros and the cons. Talk to people in the field of law enforcement and try to get as realistic a picture as you can.


You didn't mention your wife's take on it...what are her thoughts and concerns?


And YES, you better look at the possibility of your kids being without a father. Not to be a fear monger, but it's very possible to be killed in that line of work, perhaps as much or more so than being in the military. You absolutely MUST think about that and include it in your decision making process.

Ask yourself if those are their fears or your fears? Be honest with this answer. The universe always gives us our life in a mirror. If we don't see it in ourselves then the Universe will give it to us in some other form so we stop and pay attention. once you figure out who's fear it is then decide to live your life the way you want it to be lived...





Don't let others fears affect your choices. Relax and take a deep breath and decide why you want to do this.





Then seek out your local law enforcement agency and go on a ride along or a few of them. Ask to interview a LT or Capt and see what they say about it. Check out the academy you'll have to go into to see what you are actually going to have to prepare for and go through.





Life is about doing what you want and trusting that things will work out for the best no matter what happens.

I think that some ppl have a habit of making the negative thoughts abt others....thats their habit....they can not accept the thoughts of others, hence they give thumbs down to them....

still, if you never have received one, is it really the YS experience of different opinions and will their tolerance stretch to those who say nay and thumbs down? It is good exercise.

If the person who thumbs down one answer for the correct reason then I wouldn't say anything to him.But if it is for no reason then I would be angry with him and I would give him thumbs down for his answer.

I'm not a parent, but I'd be willing to bet that most parents haven't had half the experience I have with special needs kids. That's a whole different area that parenting can't possibly prepare a person for (unless you're parenting a special needs child). There are wonderful parents of ';normal'; kids who adopt a special needs child thinking they know it all - and end up disrupting the adoption because they can't hack it. And besides that, there are as many parenting styles as there are children - parenting doesn't prepare you for anything but parenting YOUR child. Some of the worst employees we had at the RTC I worked at were self-righteous parents who thought they knew everything because they had x number of kids. Sure was tough for them to realize they didn't know squat about kids who have been hurt their whole lives, and that their 21 year old supervisor was far better at deescalating a client than they were, even with all their parenting experience.
Ok, I am the type of person you are complaining about. I am not a parent yet (am expecting my first child the begining of August) and I am not an adoptee. I have made that very clear when I answer any questions.





To let you know why I do answer some questions in this section, I am a bio child with adopted siblings (from the foster care system) ranging from 16-19 years younger than I am. I try and answer some of the questions that potential adoptive parents have about how their bio children might react.





I also answer some questions in regards to how families deal with the Foster Care system in the US.





I work to only answer the questions that I have a personal connection to. I could never say what it is like to be an adoptive parent or an adoptee or anything that I am not.





I know that there are a lot of people that answer questions that they know nothing about, but not all of the questions in the adoptive section are limited to the experiences of people who have raised a child or who are adopted.
You don't have to be a parent in order to have knowledge on parenting, children and pregnancy. Anyone can read a book, talk to someone who is a parent, go to school to become a nurse/doula/midwife. And remember, Yahoo Answers is open to the public, anyone who makes an account can post. If your looking for something where only mothers and those who have experinced adoption can talk..I would suggest you make your own private ';group';.
I think people that have to ask this question should not be a parent. The ';only a parent could understand mentality'; was left behind in the 50's.





I think someone that has worked around many children and their families and see's the bad side of adoption would know quite alot more than someone ';paying off'; an agency to find them the type of baby their looking for.
unfortunatley there a whole lot of people who ARE parents that don't give good advice and are not the best parents in the world. Just because one doesn't have kids doesn't mean they don't have an opinion or had experiences with children. When asking a question on here you have to expect all the looney toons in the world could answer.
A person doesn't have to be a parent to have experience with children. You also don't have to be a parent to have a vast knowledge about adoption. Which you clearly are lacking or else you would admire her wisdom. Many of us here don't take kindly to calling people out either.

Also they think that because they saw someone else do it that they know. They don't.





There is very little they have to offer unless they work with kids.

It's a well known fact I gave my BEST parenting advice BEFORE I became one. LOL





Now that I am actually a parent I know better. I am still learning today and I readily admit I do not have all the answers.
